Animation can play a huge role in making concepts and interfaces clearer to understand. In a world where everyone is in a hurry and time is brief, animation can convey multiple ideas in a short amount of time while at the same time exciting and informing.

So what precisely in animation are we maintain to see more of in 2018? Animated logos is a noticeable trend and one that gives a corporation an enormous opportunity to enhance their brand further. In the struggle for eyeballs, typography is a potent weapon, and its use on the web has broadened out this year. Typography is strong and the higher, the better. So while neo-grotesque sans-serif styles like Helvetica remain in fashion, designers are branching out, turning to the massive variety of typefaces available.

The fact that device resolutions are getting excellent, amping up the legibility factor, is also opening the door for a rise in custom fonts. Designers are opting for typography with tons of personality not only for importance but also for the beautiful result. All of this and the drama afforded by oversized typefaces goes to show that 2018 will not all be about elegance, and we can expect to see bold trends continue to develop.

Flat design has made an influence on brands like Instagram, Stripe, and Apple’s iOS icons, as well as performing a starring role in the high-profile redesigns of companies like Dropbox and Mastercard.

“Thanks to progress made in web browser functionality, we also see a revival of shadows. Like gradients, shadows were shelved in favour of minimalism and 2D design. Realism and skeuomorphism are still out, but in 2018 designers will be experimenting more and more with updated, relaxed, and stylised shadows in their work.”

The interface has a surely minimal layout, but features soft, oversaturated gradients, and makes heavy use of shadow-based micro-interactions. Not only are many of the clickable keys strengthened with extending shadows, but shadows also highlight media and break up the sheet. Depth serves to determine visual authority and can point users to data fields and calls to action on screen.

Flat design was an original departure from the skeuomorphism and hyperreality of the 00s, but has the pendulum swung too far? In 2018, we’ll continue towards a best-of-both-worlds situation, in which intelligent reintroduction of shadows and gradients can add both functionality and beauty.


We’ve seen a lot more illustrations on websites in 2017, and that’s no accident. Brands require to stand out, and illustrations are a fantastic way to include personality into a site.

They are visually appealing without getting in the way of functionality and purity; illustrations come in infinite shapes, sizes, styles, and are a dynamic element to look out for in 2018. We’re learning not to neglect playfulness in the name of honest user experience.

This trend isn’t only about being playful, though. Illustrations can be extremely practical ways of displaying or explaining information. Nobody wants a monotonous website, and custom drawings are a human touch that can breathe life into otherwise boring content.

“The marketplace is saturated and competitive, and web design needs to strike stability between personality and functionality; illustrations are the excellent way to showcase who you are, just look at funemployed life.”


The responsive design evolution of the 2010s has transformed web design and enabled designers to build sites that adapt seamlessly to different devices. This year, we’ve seen an advance in designs that rebelled against the constraints of responsive design with an effort to be more ‘creative’.

“You could almost hear the consumer feedback, saying: ‘Can it be less boxy’, and designers answered.” Modern technologies meant that in 2017, the classic rules of web design were getting broken right, left and centre.

“What has been highlighted in 2017 is a drive to differentiate and break away from rules regularly. High-grade designers accept rules; they love them, they work with them. But they also discover ways to push them and to create new ways of displaying content. It’s something I hope continues into 2018.”


Mobile web usage finally passed that of desktop browsing in 2017, and it was a landmark year for the mobile web. And that means web designers will be more focused than ever on the mobile conversation next year and away.

As we proceed in 2018, I expect innovations to fully utilise mobile functionality we’ve never seen on the desktop. “2018 will continue to see designers improve clever ways to organise information beautifully and intuitively, leading to more advanced user experiences, with focuses on micro-interactions and displays over icons and buttons.

Mobile is only progressing to become more important to web designers in 2018.

“Designers require to consider how mega animations and transitions are going to render into browsers and devices like mobile, where there’s no hover states and content needs to adapt to reduced screen sizes.”


In designers’ never-ending search for more creative and charming layouts, the grid we’ve always relied on to bring harmony and logic to our layouts has itself become a kind of limitation.

Which isn’t to say that broken grid layouts ditch the concept of the grid altogether — instead, they allow images and text elements to drift into and across the gutters that usually serve as hard stops in more moderate layouts. Here, the usual modest boxes of images and text begin to overlap and converge, often creating beautifully unexpected juxtapositions of bitmap and letterform.
